Santa Vincenzo Vermentino Lotus 2010, Maremma Toscana

“Maremma unspoilt…free from the influences of wood or international varieties.” The classic wine for the fresh seafood specialties of the Tuscan coastline, Vermentino from this zona brings all the aromas and flavors of the place with it: herbs, flowers and wild fennel on the nose, white fruits and a zingy, briny smack of the sea on the palate. There is a reason that Frito Misto (shrimp, squid, octopus, fish and vegetables lightly fried in a sort of Tempura Italiana) is nearly a religious sacrament in these parts. Azienda Agricola Tiberini, Montepulciano

Luca and Fabio Tiberini’s family have lived at il Podere le Caggione in Montepulciano (a wine zona famous in Etruscan times!) for six generations with each successive generation being taught about wine from the ground up starting in the vineyards. Their estate covers 22 hectares on hillsides at over 300 meters above sea level with sixteen under vine, two dedicated to olives and the rest in forests and gardens. All of the work in the vineyards is done manually by the family with the goal to deliver perfectly ripe, low yield fruit to the cantina. As personal aside, after the devastating loss of several of our dearest and oldest friends in Italy last year, meeting the unbelievably charming, intelligent and funny Luca Tiberini was a real blessing. He then hosted several parties of visiting WINE EXPO-isti this past summer as if they were long lost family and we had not even actually bought any wine from him yet! Bravo bello….

Tiberini Pulcinculo Bianco Maturato 2007, Toscana

The most unique White we have ever offered? This crazy, wonderful Bianco is made from the same grape as Luca’s insane Vin Santo, Pulcinculo (“flea in the ass” so named because the grape has a black spot on its bottom).  It is fermented and aged in very old 500 liter oak tuns resulting in deep golden color, a rich oxidative nose with nuts and even Bourbon aromas and a BONE dry finish. Absolutely unique, VERY limited.
